The Kunstfilmtag (düsseldorf) was launched in 2007 as an art project that collects video and film art for a one-day event. Thereby it offers on the one hand a local artists' platform and on the other hand it deals with working methods and research of artists from different spaces of the world regarding specific political and intercultural backgrounds. Despite certain guidelines that have to be followed - it is not established according to festival, competition and award criteria.
It is about an artistic interest in media art and artistic film and other potential media, capturing complex processes from history and society on film through the combination of image and sound, and transferring them into the context of art. To give this cultural value of artistic film and media art a larger, internationally connected, experimental scope for presentation and reflection in the city of Düsseldorf is a key matter of the Kunstfilmtag.
The Kunstfilmtag takes place over a single day, which simultaneously gives it the particular appeal of plenitude, sense of occasion and exchange, and is not to be compared to a short film festival. The programme is developed during the year, whereby the organisers, who are artists, also invite colleagues to attend.
Since 2009 it is focussed to upgrade subject-related discussions. The text-filled programme brochure serves as a key component of the Kunstfilmtag for this purpose. From previous events such as film evenings, readings, or lectures, the theme of the year is implemented on different levels. The year-round information portal of the website also counts as networking.

Not only media artists are invited, but also those, who are originally moving in the circles of painting, sculpting, performance, photography, lyric or architecture. “Art-film” is supposed to be the total concept for the artistic film, leaving room for genre-embracing works, which recognise the picture as a place of experiments and scope of action.
